What is SEO 'title' tag and how to use it correctly?

Today I would like to talk about an integral part of SEO promotion of any website – a proper composition of title meta tag for your website. Search engine robots receive information about any website based on title, description and keywords, presented in HTML version of a website. This information is used in the process of ranking and relevance, resulting in calculated position of a website in search results.

Strictly speaking ‘title’ is not a meta tag like description and keywords. It is a double HTML tag, which unlike majority of such elements, is a part of a head unit. Title is presented in an abbreviated form in open tab of any web page in a browser and fully revealed when you put cursor to a tab. Moreover, title in most cases is recognized as a name of a document (web page) in results of all popular search engines.

How to fill in ‘title’ meta tag with content correctly?

1. Title must be unique. You can not allow two or more pages of your website to have the same title. This situation is akin to formation of doubles, which is absolutely unacceptable.

2. Usage of keywords in ‘title’ must be corresponding to subject of a particular article or your website in general. This is useful for both SEO and ordinary users, whose behavior is one of the most important ranking factors, which determines position of a website in search results.

3. Order of keywords positioning. Search engines consider the words with which begins any title to be extremely important. That is why it is recommended to put a main keyword or phrase at the beginning of title tag, depending on a theme of a website or a particular article.

4. Use literate and logical phrases. It is essential to write a title so it is easy to read and its meaning is obvious to visitors. Try to avoid grammatical errors, it will be negatively perceived by both users and search engines. Remember, all these aspects will be taken into consideration during page ranking.

5. Compose “catchy” titles. Try to use titles beginning with the words “How to…”, “What is…” “When…”, “Why…” and so on. Such titles increase readers’ interest to your website.

6. Be careful with punctuation and do not use stop characters. The most beneficial in this regard is a dash “-” separating keywords and text, and commas. Do not separate with comma separated words in key phrases, it may be incorrectly perceived by search engines.

7. Correct choice of title length. General recommendations are such that header length should not exceed 50-55 characters, sometimes less. For Google, the average limit is roughly 6-10 words. Namely this amount is usually displayed in Google search results, while the rest is cut off.

That is all for today. In the next post we will talk about keywords. You can always hire SEO professionals at latestsmmtrends.com, who can analyze SEO of your website and give practical recommendations on how to improve it.
